The city of Baia Sprie was declared a tourist resort in 2012. In addition to its geographical location in Maramureș, it offers visitors the opportunity to admire multiple tourist attractions in its surroundings. Baia Sprie has under its administration 2 lakes, 2 nature reserves, a ski complex, historic buildings, and at relatively short distances, UNESCO-listed wooden churches, monasteries, and museums. Being very close to the city of Baia Mare, tourists also have the opportunity to visit the county capital of Maramureș.
The surroundings of Baia Sprie are among the most important tourist sites, offering countless opportunities for vacations both in summer and winter.
Winter attractions include the ski slopes at Șuior and Mogoșa, equipped with chairlifts, night skiing, and snow cannons. We are also close to the Roata and Icoana slopes in Cavnic (22 km away).
In summer, we invite you to visit the Blue Lake Nature Reserve (Lacul Albastru) (www.laculalbastru.ro)—a 30-minute walk from the city center. You can also hike to the Creasta Cocoșului Nature Reserve (www.creastacocosului.ro), a protected natural area classified as a natural monument. Just a 10-minute drive away, you can visit Bodi Lake, Mogoșa Peak (1246 m), and the artificial lake at Cota 1000 Șuior, accessible by chairlift, forest road, bicycle, on foot, or with an off-road vehicle.
In the village of Chiuzbaia, which belongs to Baia Sprie, you can visit the fossiliferous reserve or hike up Igniș Peak.
Just 7 km from Baia Sprie are two wooden churches included in the UNESCO World Heritage list: the wooden church in Șurdești, known as the tallest wooden church in the world, and the wooden church in the nearby village of Plopiș.
Baia Sprie has a population of approximately 16,000 and was one of the important mining centers in Maramureș. It was first documented as a mining town in 1329.
